Many people in our communities feel overwhelmed\, disconnected\, or unsure of how to participate in civic life. This session is designed to help us counter that disengagement by giving our members practical tools\, shared language\, and a sense of purpose as they talk with their networks about why voting matters now more than ever. \nRSVP NOW \nPurpose of the Session\nKenyona “Sunny” Matthews will lead us through an interactive exercise that helps us: \n\nUnderstand who “kitchen table voters” are and what they care about.\nIdentify the top issues affecting our communities over the next six months.\nPractice ways to connect everyday concerns to civic participation.\nBuild confidence in having conversations with people who feel politics is confusing\, overwhelming\, or irrelevant.\nShift from “acting upon” communities to “acting within” them—meeting people where they are and connecting civic engagement to real needs.\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker: Kenyona “Sunny” Matthews\nSunny Matthews is a motivational speaker and community advocate whose work centers on inclusion\, fairness\, and affirming the humanity in everyone. Originally from Greensboro\, North Carolina\, she studied government\, philosophy\, and African American history at Guilford College\, where she helped launch anti‑racism initiatives and diversity programs. She later earned her law degree from the University of Akron with a focus on civil rights. \nSunny has worked extensively in multicultural community engagement\, youth leadership\, and civic empowerment. Now based in Akron with her family\, she speaks to schools\, organizations\, and community groups about respectful dialogue\, equity\, and building stronger communities. She is known for her warmth\, positivity\, and ability to help people feel seen and valued—earning her the nickname “Sunny.” \n

We’re diving into our five focus areas for 2026: \nFive focus areas\n\nHelp build local power\nHelp activate and engage voters\nLead through protests\nBuild community\nStrength coalitions\n\nFirst\, our co-founder\, Noelle Bowman\, will explain the five focus areas. Then we’ll break into five small groups. We’ll need a facilitator and a note-taker for each group. If groups are too large\, we’ll break into 10 small groups\, two for each focus area. This is a great way to share ideas and get more involved in protecting democracy because #2026BELONGSTOUS! \nIMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PARKING\nParking is accessible off Union Street. The church holds an open food pantry on the same night as our meeting. Please allow food pantry customers and our members with mobility issues to have priority parking in the lot closest to the church. Everyone else\, please park in the overflow lot to the south of the main parking lot or in the lot across Union Street.
